On Gems
Gems are the main computational element in staves. They are responsible for actually executing and managing enchantments, as well as controlling individual spellforms. Their position is so central that it can be said that gems are the main source of a staff’s properties.
Gems must be cut and faceted, a process commonly described as “revealing”. This procedure is commonly done on a “Gemcutter”. The Gemcutter thus is able to both reveal the gem’s base properties, as well as allow for the application of upgrades. Upgrades apply additional modifiers to a gem’s
properties, and can be applied to any gem provided it has sufficient upgrade slots.
